My Thoughts and Feedback as a Registered Dietitian Who Uses This Service:

I LOVE CHEF’S PLATE! It is the most professional and well-run meal healthy delivery service I’ve found to-date after trying a few different options in the London area.

My husband and I have been using Chef’s Plate for the past 3 months now, and we only have good things to say about it. All of the meals have included very high quality sources of lean meats and clean carbs, and an ABUNDANCE of vegetables. All of the meals have been fresh and really good tasting (think “restaurant quality”), and the chefs who design the meals have been amazing at using a blend of fresh herbs and spices to compliment the flavours of each meal. Portion sizes have been perfect, and we both leave the table feeling satisfied but not stuffed.

We also are finding that we have significantly less food waste going in the garbage each week, because Chef’s Plate only sends you just enough for what you require to cook the meal, but nothing more. The meals are delivered tightly compact and stored efficiently, so they take up less space in our fridge compared to how we used to grocery shop.

For the quality of their meals, taste, and portion sizes you get, I find the price to be very reasonable, and in fact, we actually find that we’re now saving more money because we eat out less, don’t overspend as much on groceries, and enjoy these home cooked meals more often.

My F
avourite Parts of Chef’s Plate:

  • Lowered stress with dinner planning. Their chefs come up with the great meal ideas, we pick what we like, and they take care of the grocery shopping, ingredient prep, and delivery part for us. All we have to do is focus on is the cooking, eating, and enjoying part of the meal.
  • Amazing taste. The meals we’ve ordered so far have all been SO GOOD! The Chef’s Plate meals are way better tasting than how I was cooking on my own before.
  • Lots of vegetables. As a Registered Dietitian, getting enough vegetables in a meal is a deal breaker about whether I’ll recommend a “healthy meal delivery service” or not. Chef’s Plate typically focuses on making half of the plate filled with fresh vegetables, so you get my thumbs up on that!
  • Exposure to new foods. Chef’s Plate has exposed us to so many new and yummy foods that many people might not venture out and try on their own (e.g. sunchokes, okra, fennel, choy sum, soba noodles, etc.), and they’ve all been a hit.
  • Perfect portion sizes. Not too much, not too little, and very satisfying!
  • Creative meals. We haven’t been bored yet of their menu selection, and there’s lot of variety to choose from to keep dinners interesting!
  • Learning to cook. With their detailed, helpful, and picture-filled recipe cards, we’ve taken on some more complex recipes and increased our competence in the kitchen. Cooking together has also turned into a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend time connecting with my husband after a long day at work, without stressing over what we’re going to make for dinner.
  • You can copy the meals you love and make them again. Because each recipe card has clear cooking instructions, ingredient measurements, and directions to follow, you can recreate any recipe you especially enjoyed on your own another time.

Downsides of Chef’s Plate:

  • Time: You still have to allow at least 30 minutes of preparation and cooking before your meal is ready to eat. The meals definitely do not come fully cooked and ready to be re-heated quickly, so if you’re looking for that, this is the wrong service for you.
  • Cost: For some families, $10.95/plate is going to be too expensive. I look at this cost as not only for the price of food and delivery, but for the time their chefs spent to creatively meal plan, grocery shop, and prep the ingredients on my behalf, saving me time and effort at home.
  • Clean-Up: With making your own meals, you’ll have to put a bit of elbow grease into scrubbing your own pots and pans and cleaning up after the cooking process.

Final Thoughts:

Although you do have to be ok with actually COOKING the Chef’s Plate meals that are delivered (so budgeting 20-35 minutes of your time), you end up with a healthy, good tasting, and satisfying meal, without overeating or wrecking your healthy food goals. This program probably won’t work for you if you have a ton of food restrictions or aren’t open-minded to trying new foods, but if you don’t fall into that category, you might be pleasantly surprised with how good of a cook you can actually be, since their chefs set you up for success.

I hope you found this review of Chef’s Plate helpful, and if you do decide to use their service if you live in the province of Ontario, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
