Bias Against Females in the Workplace

Discrimination Against Females in the Workplace

bias against females in the workplaceA friend of mine recently received a rude and dismissive email passing her over for a job opportunity that she is more than qualified for as a registered healthcare professional, simply because she is FEMALE.

As a female entrepreneur, this breaks my heart that this kind of behaviour is still going on in 2016! My friend and colleague Wendy Hinton is an amazing Registered Massage Therapist and entrepreneur at Be Balanced Wellness Centre.

She is by far, the BEST RMT I have ever worked with. Period. {And I don’t throw around the word “best” lightly.}

She’s incredibly passionate about pursuing continuing education, delivers exceptional care to her clients, and has achieved so many additional certifications (esp. working with youth and athletes) that it makes no sense why she was turned away from working with an athletic sports team that involves minors, simply because of her gender.

She has years of experience treating athletes of all levels and backgrounds, from recreational to the very elite (i.e. NHL hockey players), males and females, young and old. She is also won awards for being “educator of the year” teaching RMT classes at the college level, so she has a winning combination of academic + hands-on experience on her glowing resume.

Discrimination against females in the workplace

I don’t know why this individual who sent Wendy this message was so short sighted to blindly turn her away from a position that she is more than qualified to handle, but I hope this person’s ignorance can shed some light that this is still going on to females in the workplace.

Let’s agree that instead of wasting our energy getting mad (or sad), or silently giving in through passivity, that we’ll use this situation to raise awareness and be the change we are seeking in the world surrounding fair employment opportunities.

Women – let’s continue to break the glass ceiling until we’ve shattered it into a million pieces!!!

To all of us who hold ourselves to a higher standard, let’s continue to use our positions of power to hire the RIGHT INDIVIDUAL based on their SKILLS and COMPETENCY LEVEL… and let’s agree to leave a person’s gender (or any other self-identifying fact – sexual orientation, age, religious background, appearance, financial status, etc.) out of the decision about whether someone is right for the job or not.

Wishing you health & happiness,

Jen
